Floor Concrete Cost and How to Succeed At Pouring Floor Slabs

A quick look at floor concrete pour costs, and tips for getting it right.

Floor Slabs Require the Right Concrete

When pouring a concrete floor slab, always use a proper floor concrete mix. This is not an area to cut costs with the wrong material. A common mistake is ordering a basic structural concrete for a floor. It might meet strength requirements, but its workability is poorer, leading to frustration (and a rougher finish) on site. Floor concrete mixes are specifically designed for ease of placement and finishing.

Quality of Floor Concrete

Floor concretes have an optimal ratio of fine to coarse aggregate for easy finishing. They typically have a higher slump (around S4 consistency), meaning the mix is more fluid and can be levelled more smoothly. If you need the slab to dry quickly for early finishing or coating, you should request a quick-drying floor concrete. And if your pour will use a long pump hose, a fine-grain floor concrete helps minimize any risk of the hose clogging. When casting a garage floor or other surface that will face heavy wear, keep in mind you may need a higher-strength concrete than for a normal domestic floor.

Floor Slab Concrete Cost

For the concrete itself, floor slab concrete typically costs about £90–£130 per cubic metre. This is the material cost for the concrete mix (assuming an average floor concrete grade); it does not include delivery or pump hire. If you’re not doing the work DIY, you’ll also need to factor in labour. Hiring professionals to place and finish the slab will increase the overall project cost.

You can get a ballpark figure for a specific slab (for example, a garage floor) using our concrete calculator. Simply input the dimensions and choose a floor slab project type to see an estimated cost.

Estimate Your Floor Slab Concrete Price

Try our Concrete Price Calculator to get an estimate for your floor. Input the length, width, and thickness of the slab, and choose the appropriate concrete type (normal floor concrete vs. a higher-strength floor concrete). The calculator will give you an approximate price, so you know what to expect. Remember that final pricing will include delivery and any pumping or finishing services.

Tip: Slab thickness is typically 100–150 mm for domestic projects.
The calculator works out length × width × thickness ÷ 1 000 to give volume in m³.
Allow around 10 % extra for waste or uneven ground conditions.
